The Light We Share: Samhain and the Spirit of Timebanking
Oíche Shamhna shona daoibh: a happy Samhain to you all.
On the night of 31 October, the old Celtic year comes to a close. Samhain (pronounced SOW-in) marked the end of the harvest and the beginning of the dark half of the year. For the Celts, the new year didn't begin in the light. It began in the dark, the way a seed begins underground.
Samhain was a time to bring in what had been grown, to make sure no one would go without through the winter, and to gather close. Centuries later, those same instincts sit at the heart of timebanking.
One fire, every hearth
Irish tradition tells of the great Samhain fire on the Hill of Tlachtga, near Athboy in County Meath. Households would let their own hearths go out, and every home was relit from that one shared flame.
It is a picture worth holding on to. No single household made its own warmth. It came from what the whole community kept burning together.
A timebank works in just the same way. When you give an hour, whether that's fixing a bike, sharing a meal or keeping someone company, you add to a fire that belongs to everyone. When you need help yourself, you can take a light from it. Nobody keeps score in money. An hour is an hour, whoever gives it and whatever the task.
Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine.
People live in each other's shelter. (Irish proverb)
Three Samhain traditions, woven into timebanking
The meitheal: many hands at harvest
Long before tractors, neighbours came together in a meitheal to bring in each other's harvest, moving from farm to farm until everyone's work was done. You gave your day, and the day came back to you. Nobody sent an invoice.
That is the simplest way to explain timebanking to anyone who asks. It is a modern meitheal, where one hour given is one hour earned, and the help flows around the whole community rather than back and forth between two people.
The thin veil: honouring those who came before
At Samhain, the boundary between this world and the next was said to grow thin, and families took time to remember the people who had gone before them.
Perhaps the greatest gift our elders left us is what they knew: how to mend and make do, how to cook and grow and preserve, how to sing a song and tell a story well. Much of that knowledge lives on only because someone took the time to pass it on. Teaching a skill through the timebank is one of the most meaningful ways to keep it alive.
The barmbrack: a loaf made for sharing
The Halloween báirín breac is baked to be sliced and passed around the table, each piece hiding a little fortune: a ring, a coin, a pea or a stick. It only works if it is shared.
The same is true of a community. Everyone has something worth sharing: a talent, a spare hour, a listening ear or a lift to the shops. You never know whose slice holds the ring.
Carrying the light through winter
The dark months can be long, especially for anyone living alone, recovering from illness, or caring for someone else. Just as our ancestors stored up the harvest so the whole community could get through to spring, we can store up kindness now.
Here are a few ways to share an hour this season:
- A cuppa and a chat. Call in on a neighbour who might not see many people over the winter.
- Batch cooking. Make an extra pot of soup or stew for someone who would welcome a warm meal.
- Putting the garden to bed. Help clear leaves, tidy beds and plant bulbs for spring.
- Lifts on dark evenings. Offer a lift to an appointment, the shops or a community gathering.
- Stories by the fire. Share local history, folklore or family stories, or record an elder's memories.
- Teaching a winter skill. Knitting, bread-making or draught-proofing a door: pass on what you know.
Keep your hearth lit
If you're already a member, here's a small Samhain reminder. Just as every home relit its fire, your place in the timebank needs a little spark now and then. To stay active, simply log in. Members who haven't logged in for a while are no longer shown in the members directory, so neighbours looking for help, or offering it, can't find them. Log in, and you're back.
While you're there, why not mark the Celtic new year with a fresh start? Refresh your profile, share a post to say hello, and update your offers and requests with what you can give, or would love help with, this winter.
